So why is the album forgotten - the truth is that it's not just melancholic in tone; it's only half good at it. Flanders wrote all the songs himself except "Morning Misty Eyes" which is co-written with Gabriel Mekler worked with Etta James among others - and many are nice, but not much more.

However, I would argue that 3 tracks on the record are truly great and absolutely worth the price of your admission - "Blue Water Blue", "The Moonstone" and "She's My Love".

The title track is the most inspired tune on the record - slightly trippy, it's instantly catchy and has turned up on cool compilations like Jon Savage's "Meridian " see separate reviewwhile the finisher "She's My Love" lyrics above is undeniably beautiful even if it does have some cruddy dialogue at the beginning and end of it.

It's not all genius of course, but the good stuff genuinely deserves your attention. Check "The Moonstone" out - it's worth the effort It's another folky gem rarity from on Capitol Records - and again - it has beautiful sound quality Una persona l'ha trovato utile. This is the lone album by Tommy Flanders, one time singer in The Blues Project, a great '60s band that was a blend of rock, folk, jazz, and blues.

Flanders quit the band and in released this album that would become known as the "singer-songwriter" style of music. Forget the Skip Spence comparisons or the "wyrd"-folk label put on this album by some people. His small backing band was made up of studio hot-shots and the backing arrangements are a good foil for Flanders songs.

The band sounds tight without sounding slick and nondescript. With musicians like Bruce Langhorne on lead guitar, and Jerry Scheff on bass, along with a couple of other equally fine players, this is a perfect example of a well produced, well played set of songs. I remember hearing this album which I still own when it was originally released on the Verve label the same label as The Blues Project and thinking that this was a better than average singer-songwriter album--there was just something about Flanders' songs, his voice, and the band--that set it apart.

Back in those days we scoured the liner notes for information on who played on the albums. And Langhorne's name appears on many of the finest folk-rock albums of the period. And this too is one of those albums. The songs--written soley by Flanders except for one co-write--are small slices of Flander's life during this period. Mostly mid-tempo melodies with the band sounding crisp behind Flanders slightly worn voice, these are contemplative tunes that mirror that era.

This is the type of album that grows on you the more you hear it. A Detective Story. Purple and Blue. The Moonstone. By the Mailbox We Stood. Angel of Mercy. Boston Girls. She's My Love. Blue Water Blue Tommy Flanders. Morning Misty Eyes Tommy Flanders.

This is the type of album that grows on you the more you hear it. These songs just seem to sink into your head--the lyrics, Flanders' voice, and the excellent backing band--combine into a good example of late '60s folk-rock. This album can easily sit alongside those albums.

A good, unassuming, LP, good sounding album. One of my favorite albums ever. A VERY 6o's disc in all ways, right down to the floppy chapeaux.
