I'm trying to find the Kevin grey mastering of giant steps but I'm confused a bit with what's available on line todayit looks like amazon maybe has a different version. Looks like maybe newbury comics online has it if they have Untitled - Andrew White - Seven Giant Steps For Coltrane (Vinyl correct cat number on their LP). It should have this sticker for a Kevin grey, right? The Kevin Gray version has audible tape damage, LP), the best sounding affordable copies of Giant Steps are the all analog US pressings from the '70s.

  1. An amazing album – not just for its tribute to the tune "Giant Steps" – but for the great playing of saxophonist Andrew White! In a move that almost makes him like the Pop-O-Pies of the jazz world, White serves up 7 versions of the same tune – an idea might be a bit odd, when the tune is Coltrane's legendary "Giant Steps", and when White improvises freely to take each version in a whole Brand: Andrew's Music (Label).

  4. Aug 15,  · I recently bought twp copies of the Kevin Gray mastered John Coltrane /Giant Steps on Rhino Vinyl and there are problems with both. The first copy (hence the reason I now have two copies) had a lot of visual marking on the vinyl and most of side two was plagued by a lot of grating-sounding distortion (like someone blowing a raspberry every now and then) and very high levels of surface noise.

  9. This record has no connection whatever with "Giant Steps" but is extremely interesting nonetheless. The first session, not "live" but recorded, well, in a studio, shows Coltrane on alto, at 20, already fluent as a Bird imitator. The music is competent and historically important, and it's a /5(3).
