I get the feeling that most of this music was instigated by the mysterious Nando Tischer, who sang lead on much of this album, and seemed to fall off the face of the Earth after its release.
Apart from Chris Karrer's lone spotlight piece, the futuristic eight-minute "Mr. Much of it's a very tongue-in-cheek overview of German history-just check out the "interview" that precedes "La Krautoma", itself a cheeky version of an Argentine tango "La Paloma" that enjoyed huge popularity in 's Germany. Renate comes off looking best here, with numerous spotlight pieces "Metropolis", "Blue Grotto", the folkish "Wide Angle". It would be her last album with the band for many years.
The music itself is very much hit and miss as you might expect with the 20 tracks they have composed. The first track "Overture" is pure Classical music and I dislike it immensly. Sorry Classical music fans but that's one genre that does nothing for me but make me cringe.
Another highlight is "Metropolis" which again has that 60's flavour. Renate shines on vocals. One of my favs. Kraut's Jinx" builds with the sound of wind in the background. Vocals male a minute in are spoken. Violin 3 minutes in and later at 5 minutes. The guitar come in with aggression 7 minutes in as the tempo picks up. Their first album Phallus Dei 'God's Phallus'released inconsisted of pieces drawn from the group's live set at the time.
By this time the line-up was built around a core of Karrer mainly violin and guitarWeinzierl guitar, bass, pianoRogner on keyboards, bass player Dave Andersonand two drummers Peter Leopold b. Renate Knaup at this point was only contributing minimal vocals but was very much part of the group.
According to Weinzierl by this time "The band played almost every day. We played universities, academies, underground clubs, and every hall with a power socket and an audience". Their second album Yeti saw them introducing arranged compositions along with the bluesy violin and guitar jams such as the long improvised title track.
The next album Tanz der Lemminge was based on four extended progressive rock suites.
