Leroy Dallas, like Seward and Willis, was a friend of Brownie McGhee, and made a few recordings in andcutting a couple of more tracks for Pete Welding in He Album) in a variety of blues and gospel groups and cut some fine downhome bluesgarnering success teaming up with his wife Ann. He recorded a handful of sides under his own name as well as doing some session work. Finally we spin sides by the obscure Alonzo Scales who was born in North Carolina and cut a session and one in He remembered that itinerant potato pickers around Norfolk had helped teach him.

These sides were originally issued in the Stinson label. Hayes recorded a couple of tracks for the Apollo label before vanishing into obscurity while. He was born in Asheville, N. The two of them started working around together at house parties and made these records according to several letters from Mr. Hayes, in They made further recordings for the Apollo label and according to correspondence from Mr. He further told me that he and Alex were the owners of the True Blue label, under which logo many of these sides originally appeared as 78 rpm releases.

Seward recorded four excellent tracks with Sonny Terry in Later in the decade Seward worked in concert and at folk blues festivals.

Seward died of natural causes in Mayat the age of 71, in New York City. The earliest of these are from alongside Sonny Terry and Woody Guthrie. These songs were issued on the 10 inch albums Chain Gang Vol. Rather, they were targeting the audience which Leadbelly and Josh White had a corner on: sympathetic white leftists, who could be found at hootenannies, political rallies, trade union meetings, and fundraising events.

Inevitably, among the musicians the fell in with was Woody Guthrie, whose energetic self-promotion, considerable songwriting talents, rough and rowdy ways, and Oklahoma origins had cumulatively made him the leading light and musical conscience of the New York urban music scene.

Seward and Bobby Harris seem to be the ones splitting the vocal duties. Willis made his first recordings in and continued recording untilissuing fifty tracks on several labels, including Savoy, Signature, 20th Century, Abbey, Jubilee, Prestige, Par, and King, Brownie McGhee And John Cephas - Big Chief Ellis (CD. At first he was recorded on his own, but eventually his record companies frequently paired him with accompanists. Willis died in New York in June He graduated to the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College Big Chief Ellis Featuring Tarheel Slim also studied medicine.

Born to a poor family, he was always working jobs on the side; and, being musical, he played Hawaiian guitar and sang with a group called the Sun to Sun Singers. He soon changed to Spanish guitar, playing mostly in the open tunings of G and D and became accomplished enough to represent the state of Florida at the St Louis National Folk Festival in where he won first prize as the outstanding singer of folk songs and as a guitarist. Together they went into Florida where they located and recorded Gabriel Brown for the Library of Congress.

Some of these sides were also issued on Gennett and the Joe Davis label. Indespite the fact that only two of the eight sides from the initial session had been released, Davis brought Brown into the studio on two separate occasions to record a total of twelve numbers.

Four of these tracks were never released as 78 rpm discs. There is a serious doubt in my mind that there are enough folks interested in it all if the past poor sales performance of Trix Records output is to be taken into account. But I have here pointed out the high points in a very high-quality sequence of album releases that kind of flopped as commercial entities back then. So far, only the one album has been released, but hold onto your Album) for there is way more there that could come!

This was a blockbuster, as they say these days including many folks that we had located in our field-work as before, Big Chief Ellis Featuring Tarheel Slim known but appropriate people who lived outside the SE like Eddie Burns, and J.

Hutto [2]. Lots more albums could come from those tapes today as well. Tate, and Larry played solo, or together, while Eddie worked with members of a local band from the Hudson Valley [3]. I recorded each of their sets and have not listened to them since — there may be too much wind noise on the microphones, a problem with outdoor concerts, but time will tell.

My god, what a talent was Willie, folks! Of the six albums I put together for Atlantic, this is my favorite of all of them, and a major coup for my efforts with the label.

The other five were good collections, but that one is the jewel in the crown for me! Such is life. I also did notes earlier for the Buddy Moss LP on Biograph, although that fact could be missed in the small typeface used on the back! It was my first free-lance assignment, too! I did the photography and the notes and they can be found in this site as well.

They were Buddy Tate tsEddie Vinson asand Arnett Cobb tsand they played together with a fine local Boston area rhythm section. Help Community portal Recent changes Upload file.
