The Savages — especially saxman Steve LaGrega — keep pace on wacky old numbers like "Bip Bop Bip," "Mama Get the Hammer" and "Georgia Slop," contributing likely originals to this raw adventure that hardly seems like it was recorded in The brief but exhilarating "Dig yourself " adds a little surface sheen and showband politesse to the proceedings, but still contains a weekend's worth of sweaty, sexy excitement.

Whitfield recorded "Call of the Wild"a six-song inch released only in the UK, with an entirely new set of Savages, revamping the sound with piano and organ as well as a slicker, steadier rhythm section.

The American "Ow! It's likable enough — this man can sing — but seriously short in the funkalicious spirit that makes the earlier ones so precious. 1. Boston’s legendary Barrence Whitfield & The Savages’ new album Dig Thy Savage Soul is a wealth of atomic-powered, sock it to me R&B and rock & roll hoodoo. Barrence, possessing otherworldly pipes that range from a low feral growl rumbling the nether regions to a scream that would make Little Richard blush, belts out originals and crate-diver covers with the formidable and aptly-named Savages.

  3. Mar 02,  · This is a handy collection consisting of Barrence Whitfield and the Savages' never on CD second album, Dig Yourself, and tracks that were recorded for a Europe only mini album that later ended up on their third domestic album Ow!/5(6).
  4. Barrence Whitfield and the Savages sounds, on its own, like a declaration of rock’n’roll authenticity. Uncompromising would have been a description of Barrence and the Savages that the Del Fuegos would rather not have had confirmed only a few days after Dave had lent me the LP.
  5. Barrence Whitfield & the Savages shot out of Boston in the mid-'80s with the force of a cannonball. Through their sweaty dance party shows and love of primal soul, they were to R&B what the Cramps were to rockabilly—a gateway musical drug for nascent underground roots mavens (including a wide-eyed, dewy-eared future Bloodshot co-founder Rob.
